Colour Series: Water-Based Painted Plank Blocks
What the colour series is
The same plank dimensions as the natural wood series, finished in water-based colour instead of left clear. Colour is applied as a coating, not a dye: the planks read as painted rather than stained, which means a clean, flat tone rather than visible grain through colour.
Because the piece dimensions are identical to the natural series, the two can be mixed in one build. That matters more than it sounds — a coloured roof on a natural-wood tower is a different toy, and it costs the customer nothing to discover that.
Why water-based rather than solvent
Three practical consequences, in order of how often they matter to buyers:
- No solvent odour on opening. A solvent-finished set smells of the coating for days after the carton is opened. This is the single most common complaint in reviews of cheap painted wooden toys, and it is entirely avoidable.
- Migration testing is more predictable. EN71-3 tests heavy metal migration from the coating. Water-based systems are formulated without the heavy-metal pigments that made older solvent paints risky, so colourways pass consistently rather than one at a time.
- Cure time is longer. This is the cost. Water-based finishes need proper drying before packing, which is a real constraint on lead time and the reason a factory under pressure will quietly switch to solvent.
What to specify when ordering
| Property | Specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Coating type | Water-based, explicitly | Solvent substitution is the most common silent downgrade |
| Coats | Two coats minimum | One coat shows sanding marks and wears through at edges |
| Migration test | EN71-3 by colourway | A clear-finish report does not cover a painted one |
| Colour fastness | Rub test / saliva test | Relevant for toys handled by young children |
| Odour | No solvent smell on opening | Cheap to check, expensive to discover on arrival |
What buyers should expect from colour consistency
Water-based colour is consistent between pieces within a batch and very close between batches, but it is not identical to a Pantone reference under every light. If your channel requires exact colour matching — a branded set where the blocks must match the packaging, for example — confirm the target shade against a physical sample rather than a screen.
Small tone variation between production runs is normal and not a defect. Large variation within a single set is a defect, and is usually a sign that two batches were packed together.
Who it suits
- Retail — colour photographs consistently and displays well on a shelf.
- Gift positioning — a coloured set reads as a finished product rather than a craft material.
- Classroom use — colour coding lets a teacher build sorting and pattern exercises into free play.
It suits poorly where the brand story is explicitly "natural materials only" — for that positioning, the natural wood series is the right product.
Sets and terms
Standard sets from 50 to 2,000 pieces, in the same plank dimensions as the natural series. MOQ is 500 sets for standard configurations, 1,000 per SKU for custom colours or custom packaging. Colour matching against a supplied sample adds roughly a week to sample lead time.
