Creative Shapes Series: Non-Rectangular Plank Pieces
What "creative shapes" means
Most plank sets are entirely rectangular. The creative shape series adds a small number of non-rectangular pieces — half-rounds, triangles, short pillars and a few curved profiles — to the same plank dimensions. It is an extension set, not a replacement: it works with any rectangular plank set you already have.
The point is not decoration. A half-round placed on its flat side becomes a ramp; a triangle becomes a roof or a wedge that lets a structure turn a corner; a short pillar becomes a pier under a bridge. Each piece unlocks a category of build that rectangular planks cannot make.
What the set adds to a build
| Shape | What it enables | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Half-round | Ramps, arcs, rolling runs | Marble runs, curved roofs |
| Triangle | Corners, roofs, wedges | Turning a wall 45 degrees, pitched roofs |
| Short pillar | Elevated piers | Bridges, multi-level structures |
| Long curve | Smooth spans | Arches, tunnel mouths |
In practice, children use the non-rectangular pieces for about 10% of the total build and those pieces are what make the result look like a thing rather than a stack. That ratio is worth knowing when you are choosing how many to include in a set.
Why the dimensions must match
A shaped piece that is 1 mm thicker than the planks around it will not sit flush, and the joint becomes the failure point. The creative shapes are therefore cut to the same thickness tolerance as the plank series — ±0.3 mm — and in multiples of the same base thickness, so a half-round can replace a plank in a layer without changing the height of that layer.
This is the specification worth asking about. A set with attractive shapes that do not match the planks in thickness is a display item, not a building toy.
Who buys it
- Existing owners — the most common buyer, adding range to a set they already have.
- Classrooms — shaped pieces let a teacher set problems that rectangular planks cannot solve.
- Retail upsell — a small add-on set at a low price point that increases basket size.
Choosing between this and a bigger plank set
If the child already has 200 or more rectangular planks, add shapes. If they have fewer than 100, a bigger rectangular set will be used more — quantity limits plank play far more than variety does. Shapes change what can be built; planks determine how much can be built.
