Natural Wood Series: Unpainted Plank Blocks and What to Expect
What the natural wood series is
Planks with no paint and no tinted coating: sanded, then sealed with a clear water-based finish or left with a light oil and wax. The grain, the colour variation between pieces and the occasional small knot stay visible. That is the point of the series — the material is the design.
Why buyers choose it
- Fewer compliance complications. No pigment means no heavy-metal migration question in the coating, which simplifies EN71-3 testing and the paperwork that follows it.
- It suits the positioning. Natural-finish wooden toys fit Montessori-style and "no plastic" retail categories without any marketing effort.
- It ages visibly but gracefully. Edges round slightly with use, which most parents read as character rather than damage. Painted blocks show chips; natural blocks show wear.
- It is easier to repair. A scuff can be sanded and re-oiled. A chipped painted edge cannot be touched up invisibly.
What you have to accept
Colour variation between pieces is inherent, not a defect. Two planks from the same set may differ noticeably in tone, and a set produced in March will not match one produced in September exactly. If your channel requires visual uniformity — a photograph-driven marketplace listing, for instance — the colour series will photograph more consistently.
Knots are also normal. They do not affect strength at the sizes used for planks, but they are visible, and some buyers will ask about them.
The specification that matters
| Property | Target | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Moisture content | 8–12% | Wetter wood bows in a dry warehouse |
| Thickness tolerance | ±0.3 mm | A 0.5 mm drift makes towers lean |
| Edge treatment | Consistent chamfer | Uneven chamfer means a worn cutter |
| Finish | Water-based, non-toxic | No solvent odour on opening |
| Surface | No raised grain or loose fibre | Splinter risk in a children's product |
Care instructions to give your customers
Wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately. Do not soak, do not dishwash, and keep the set out of bathrooms and damp garages. Water swells the grain and a swollen plank never sits flat again. Once or twice a year, a very thin coat of food-safe oil restores the surface if it starts to look dry.
Sizes and sets
The series runs as standard sets from 50 to 2,000 pieces, in the same plank dimensions as the colour series, so the two can be mixed in one build without any difference in stacking behaviour. Custom lengths are possible from 1,000 pieces per SKU.
For wholesale buyers
Natural finish is the easiest series to take through compliance because the coating carries no pigment, and it is usually the fastest to sample, since no colour matching is involved. MOQ is 500 sets for standard configurations and 1,000 per SKU for custom lengths or custom packaging.
